Extended Access provides appointments for patients across Durham Dales outside of normal GP opening times.
Increasing patients’ access to appointments is a priority in the NHS. While demand has grown, people also need more flexibility around where and when they can be seen. This was also an initiative to support the working age adults who quite often are unable to take time off work and attend GP appointments during working hours. This service is based on the Bishop Auckland Hospital site.
Our EPCA service provides same day appointments between 6pm and 8pm during the week, plus weekend mornings. Patients access appointments by calling the surgery or 111 and will be triaged into an available slot, if required. We also offer an overflow service if people need same day treatment but can’t be seen in their practice.
Extended Hours Access offers pre-bookable appointments outside of standard hours, also fulfilled by the Primary care hub in Bishop Auckland. Slots can be booked through local practices, or by calling 111 outside of normal opening hours.
Both services use a triage system and do not offer walk in appointments.
These services are provided from a designated area at Bishop Auckland Hospital
HOW IT WORKSRather than each of our member practices adding extra hours in the evening or at weekends, Durham Dales Health Federation provide a larger scale service on behalf of all 12 practices in Teasdale.
Patients can access these appointments through their usual surgery in the first instance, or through calling 111 if their practice is closed.
Trained staff will ask the nature of their issue and work out the best person to see them, and schedule an appointment at our ‘hub’ at Bishop Auckland Hospital.
Not everyone will need to be seen by a GP, or at all. In some cases a Nurse Practitioner will see patients, or signpost them to a local pharmacist for advice and over the counter medication.
